So I checked out my local used bookstore, and man, they've really grown a lot since they first opened!  Their roleplaying section is impressive as well.  Recently, I picked up some old Exalted books there.  But when I went by today, I noticed something really cool.

They had a shelf with the entire set of Mage the Awakening books, all in brand new.  I don't even mean brand new condition, I mean someone had to have bought them and then decided they didn't like Mage or something, but they're perfect.  They're also extremely cheap: only eight dollars.  I really don't have anything to do with Mage, but I figured it'd be a kind offer to let people know.

If you'll pay me for the cost of the book and shipping, I'd be happy to send them to whoever wants them.  I'm not looking for profit, just to spread around a great offer.  Also, I won't ship anything outside the U.S.  If this is illegal, or I'm not allowed to advertise this on the forums, than I'll happily delete my post.

They also have basically every single old World of Darkness book, though they aren't all in brand new condition.  They range from five to seven dollars.

If anybody is interested, post here or private message me.  I know how bad the economy is these days, and I'm happy to help out fellow White Wolf fans get their enjoyment without having to spend thirty plus dollars.   Also, it's a cheap way to get an extra copy if you like multiples like myself.

If this seems like an odd thing to post on the forums, feel free to ignore this.

Just to support the sales pitch, barring the brutal botch rules (which were fixed in all the games' revised editions, though were almost appropriate for magical actions), I consider the second edition of Mage: the Ascension to be the best rpg of all time.  Or, well, at least its my favorite one.

Edit: Oops, I typed awakening and not Ascension.  That caused a lot of confusion.

Second edition of Mage the Awakening?  You mean they changed it?  Did they do that to any of the others?

My Mage the Awakening book is old, from when it first came out.  Does that mean some of my books are outdated?  If so, which ones?

Not if some of their books have had reprints.

Why? The reprints are still the original books. Other than possibly a few errata changes, there's no difference in terms of setting and system.

I'll say it again: All of the nWoD games are still in their first edition.

Heads up, if they have Tome of the Mysteries its really hard to find, OOP, its easily going for $90 some places. I already have it (and pdf) but just in case anyone is looking for it and this place has it.

Second edition of Mage the Awakening?
My mistake.  Because he was surprised they were all brand new, I assumed he referred to the old world of darkness, Mage: the Ascension, and then continued the error by typing Awakening instead.  I never called any of the game lines by its full name, it was always Mage or Werewolf, not Ascension or Apocalypse, so, yeah, brain fart.

Mage the Ascension second edition is the best rpg of all time, not Awakening.  Awakening is an ok game, but the fluff does not even begin to resonate with me at all, and the more structured magical system (where you're generally discouraged to use non-rote effects) just makes me run back to my beloved "Purple Book."

Amen brother. I think I'll call that one. The only problem is, I'm flat broke until friday, but if you wouldn't mind getting it for me, then that would be awesome.

Not to derail, but would it more appropriate to say instead that you are encouraged to use rote effects?  Means almost the same thing as far as I'm concerned.

The attitude is different.  Ascension showed rotes basically as crutches, and showcased how you could literally do anything.  The paradigms were also treated with different attitudes.  I know you can change the mythos in Awakening and use creative thaumaturgy, but its not the focus.  Ascension said "you are not constrained in any way, do whatever you want, we will barely even give you suggestions to cloud your mind, just go with whatever" and nothing, to me, is better than that.

I'm not going to claim Awakening is a bad game.  Its not.  Its just not my favorite game of all time.

I'll see about picking it up tomorrow or Wednesday.  I don't think the bookstore is widely visited by gamers, because a lot of the same stuff is always around.  The store is usually a place to buy paperbacks that you just resell, or DVDs and such.  I only discovered roleplaying books in the bar back corner when I was looking for textbooks.  You can find "Vampire the Masquerade" next to "Biological Chemistry."

Yeah, that's mostly why I only used an emoticon.

There are pros and cons to using creative thaumaturgy and rote casting.  Both are viable.  Stick around the Mage forums long enough and you'll see alternating threads pop up, some complaining that rotes are too strong, others that they're too weak.  Ascension was great, believe me, I was pretty much an Ascesnion fanatic, I have the entire Revised run and a lot of 2ed as well, but rotes were a non-issue.  They granted you a one die bonus and there was no solid way to create them, it was all handwavium.  In Awakening they actually give a concrete bonus, making them matter, which they didn't in Ascension.

Yes, I think they encourage you to use rotes in Awakening, by making them actually significant.  They in no way eclipse creative thaumaturgy, though.

I didn't have time to go today.

Does anybody else have any requests for things they want or want me to look for?
