I have a player who has come up with this amazing concept for a character. He wants to play a small orphan, who is mistreated horribly, and finally one Christmas encounters Santa Claus, or the True Fae version of course, that whisks him away and, for one night, shows him all the glamour and beauty of Christmas before placing as one of his gnomes, making toys for the rest of eternity.

Now this characters tries to escape, of course, but is caught again and again until finally “Santa” grows angry and tired and puts him inside some huge toy-like maze (think the Saw movies meets the Cube but brightly colored). Finally he is able to outsmart the traps and is able to flee back to Reality.

Here he looks like the eight dwarf, the one that really couldn’t be part of Disney’s version of the story, short, mean, grumpy and with no charm. He is abnormally good with mechanical things, always tinkering and fixing stuff.

Anyhow, we got most of his character locked down by now, but we can’t decide on a kith, he would like one that had something to do with toys and has asked me to make one for him. Now I’ve never done that before, and I’m afraid to make it over powered, so I was hoping that someone here on the forum could give me an idea for what would be a suitable, and thematic, kith blessing.

Thanks in advance.

And once again I ran into a bit of a stumbling blocks with the dreams. As I understand it, a changeling normally has access to the dreams of only two different people: himself and his fetch. Beyond that he only has access to the dreams of people he has a pledge with involving the dream task, correct? (oh, I also brought up skein-walking, but since that's difficult and most changelings don't know about it, let's mostly leave that out for now)

This is all fine and good, but it raises a few issues, issues that, I suppose, mostly tie back to pledges. Suppose one makes a good-faith, mutually beneficial pledge with someone, one that involves the dream task, and that person breaks the pledge. He gets hit with the sanction of course, but is the pledge still in effect at that point? Can the changeling also still access his dreams and use that access to punish the pledge-breaker?

Also, how would one go about it if one specifically wants to mess with someone in their dreams? How would you set up a pledge entirely for the purpose of gaining access to the person's sleeping mind in order to give them nightmares and otherwise torture them?

But, in the stuff on the Mantle merit, it points out that Mantle isn't really an indication of social status, but rather indicates the level to which the changeling is mystically connected to the concept of the particular Court, and that a changeling who strongly embodies, say, Summer, will have a Summer Mantle, even if he's a hermit who stays far away from the Court and politics.

This is where things start to get a little confusing for me. Would such a changeling be described as "Courtless" because he doesn't belong to the organization of a court, or would he be considered part of the "Summer Court" because he wears the mantle and, consequently, are the only "Courtless" changelings those that have no mantle at all?

Hi, we’re looking for feedback on this alternate contract for the winter court. It’s being created in game by my wife’s character, and draws upon the narrative situation that the character is embroiled in, as well as some of the character’s personality (for example, the character has the danger sense merit, which is replicated in the first clause – not so useful for her, but she thinks that it’s an important skill for others to have – she intends to teach this contract). It’s for use in a solo game, so we’re not incredibly concerned about game balance (although it would be nice to have it somewhere near the mark). It’s also the first time either of us has tried to create a contract.

It’s part of a wider story in which the winter court, as a political entity, has become distanced from the season, and that relationship needs to be reaffirmed through the creation of a new contract with winter. This character is attempting that task, whilst in a position of self-imposed exile outside the court.

The game is set in Venice – which recently in the real world held a ‘funeral’ for the city, to highlight the threat to the city from declining population. We plan to use this as part of the ‘great endeavour’ of forging a new contract.

Thematically the contract deals with hiding – the aim of much of the winter court, but also to evoke the effect of a snow covered ground in absorbing sound, and a blizzard in obscuring sight. The contract plays on the way that in winter, under adverse conditions it is easy to miss things.

The final contract is supposed to have protective and ‘curse-like’ applications, as well as create narrative questions as to what to do if people don’t want to be hidden by winter magic, or if people are locked into it, or what changelings should do if one of their number (knowingly or unknowingly) puts themselves outside of its protection whilst the freehold is under threat. Its aim is to allow or create a ‘brigadoon’ effect whereby a freehold can disappear from a city (for a short space of time) and the city continues on around it, whilst changelings must be careful not to break the fragile protection.

Any constructive thoughts most appreciated.

The White Hall

The White Hall Contracts allow a changeling to call upon the distortion of senses brought about by harsh weather conditions within the hidden depths of Winter, serving the predilection of the winter Court for subterfuge and stealth.

Dramatic Failure: The character fails to notice their enemies, even as they draw close. People attempting to creep up on the character receive a +1 die bonus for a scene on all stealth rolls aimed at the character.

Failure: The character fails to enhance their abilities to sense nearby enemies.

Success: The character’s abilities to sense nearby enemies in enhanced, sounds are carried to the character on a chill wind and their vision is clearer and starker, receiving +1 to all Wits + Composure rolls for a scene.

Exceptional Success: The effects of the contract are further enhanced, with +2 to all Wits + Composure rolls for a scene.

The Frosted Cage (•••••)

The character evokes the effects of harsh blizzards and the vast depths snow in Winter, shielding her freehold from view and obscuring it from the senses of beings outside of the contract’s influence.

Prerequisite: Mantle (Winter) ••••

Cost: 3 Glamour + 2 Willpower

Dice Pool: Stamina + Persuasion + Mantle (Winter)

Action: Extended (each roll takes 10 minutes, the maximum time spent activating this contract is one hour)

Catch: The character has circumnavigated the freehold immediately before using the contract.

Roll Results

Dramatic Failure: The freehold immediately attracts the attention of any nearby True Fae

Failure: The character fails to activate the contract.

Success: To activate the contract the character must gain successes equal to the highest Wyrd in the freehold. All members of the freehold cannot be found for a day, though they can see and interact with each other. Changelings in the hedge or outside of the freehold at the time of the contract’s activation remain outside of The Frosted Cage. People outside of The Frosted Cage carry on with life as usual, not registering missing characters. Changelings within The Frosted Cage cannot interact with sentient beings outside, and cannot open doorway to the hedge. They can end their link to the effects of the contract by using the ‘key’ (set by the character that activated the contract) or by exiting the freehold, as the effects of the contract fade with great enough distance or on entry to the hedge. They ‘key’ must be something easily useable by all, such as a simple phrase or action.

Exceptional Success: The duration of the contract extends to two full days.

But I don't think it will be ideal for changelings and other fae people. One of the Lost may use his or her old name or make up a new one, but it seems pretty common in the books for them to have a nickname of some sort, and who really knows what kind of name a True Fae or hob-person might have?

So I was wondering: does anyone know of a compilation of good changeling/fae names? Or, failing that, a good place to find names that feel appropriate "faerie"?

I just got this idea in my head recently, for an actual lesser template that was linked with chanelings. I feel that enchanted sight via pledges or the weird half-succubus things just don't really do it for me. I wanted something like ghouls, wolf-blooded, and sleepwalkers. I basically modeled this after the scaled wolf-blood template. I offer my idea to the community, and hope that you guys find it useful for your games.

And yes, I'm the same guy who made the well-received werewolf gifts that were tied to the fae, although sadly I think they were lost when WW converted to the new forums. I do recall them somewhat though, thankfully, and I might re-make and re-post them sometime down the road. But anyways, here you guys go:

New Template: Fae-Blooded

This is a new lesser template that is given to the child of a changeling and either another changeling or a human. It has five levels with scaling benefits, just like the expanded Wolf-Blooded template does. A changeling may not reproduce without the aid of a special goblin fruit, and the cost of such a thing should not be taken lightly.

New Goblin Fruit: Phallashroom. A changeling may eat this rare long, gourd-like purple phallus-shaped goblin fruit to become temporarily fertile for a 24-hour period. This will allow them to reproduce (once) with either another changeling or a human (werewolves and Geist cannot be reproduced with, although mages can). The child will have either the 4 or 5 dot Fae-blooded merit, depending on if the changeling has a human or changeling partner.

This fruit has a drawback though. In exchange for the ability to circumvent the fae nature that prevents a changeling from creating a new life, the fruit takes a toll from the changeling parent(s) via their sanity - the one thing that keeps them part human themselves. The parent(s) automatically lose a dot of clarity, although do not roll for degeneration. Instead, they automatically gain a MAJOR derangement that is not linked to their clarity. Instead, it is linked to the existence of their child, and killing the child is the only way to make this derangement disappear, which may in itself gain the parent a derangement. The lost clarity can be brought back with experience points as normal though.

Gentry can never reproduce, even with the aid of this fruit. It does absolutely nothing for them, and they actually disdain the bitter taste it has for them (it tastes sweet for changelings though).

The reproduction must be WILLING on the changeling's part though, and essentially it is a sublime form of pledge with the wyrd itself. If a changeling eats the fruit but does not reproduce in the 24-hour window, then nothing happens - either good or bad. If a changeling is force-fed the fruit by another, they cannot be forced to either go insane or have a child if they don't truly consent to it. To the contrary, the wyrd will most likely punish those who try to abuse these rare fruits in this way.

O : The child's fae blood is weak and almost non-existent, and the character is most likely the decendant of a changeling beyond many generations (past great grand child). While they are viewed as extremely desirable catches by the gentry (almost as desirable as a full changeling), they also get along well with changelings and hobgoblins as their slight fae blood allows their mortal sides to co-exist just a little bit better with the otherwise alien fae. The character gains a +1 bonus to any dice rolls using the skills pursuasion or socialize with these entities, as long as the roll is not made with hostile intent.
OO : The child's blood has a modest connection to all things fae, and the character is probably the great grand child of a changeling. The character gains permanently enchanted fae sight, as if through a pledge.
OOO : The character's blood has a decent connection to all things fae, and the character is probably the grandchild of a changeling or changelings. The child can survive in the hedge like a changeling can, but only if they remain on paths or in hollows. They do not gain changeling-like protection for going off the path though, and the hedge will tear up their body and souls just like it would a mortal.
OOOO : The character has a strong connection to all things fae, and is probably the child of a changeling and a mortal. They gain the 4-point merit for sensing supernatural phenomena, keyed to the fae.
OOOOO : The character has an extraordinary connection to the fae, and is probably the child of two changeling parents. They gain two 1-dot contracts, one from each of the primary in-seeming contracts of their parents. However, the character does not have a wyrd rating and thus cannot store glamour, so the only way to actually utilize these contracts is through activating their catches - which the fae-blooded can do and should do in this case. The choice of contracts is up to the Storyteller, although it must be from an in-seeming contract of the parents (even if the parent doesn't themselves have it).

For example, a child of a fairest and an elemental could take Vainglory 1 and communion 1, or Separation 1 and elements 1, or any other combination like that. If both parents are of the same seeming, then the child selects two in-seeming 1-dot contracts. So the child of two fairest could gain Vainglory 1 and Separation 1, for instance. Of two elementals could gain Elements 1 and Communion 1, etc.

Oh, and the life expectancy of the fae-blooded is that of normal mortals, as they technically don't have wyrd dots.

----------
These rules create a new merit: Fae-Blooded (O to OOOOO). This may be taken by a mortal character at CHARACTER CREATION ONLY, and if they gain a greater template they lose this one, just like having any other lesser template.

However, this merit can be given to a normal mortal after character creation with a pledge boon if a Changeling wishes to imbue someone with more fae power than just enchanted sight, which by the way is still a normal pledge option too. Keep in mind that to give a mortal a great deal of power - 4 or 5 dot level - will require a most juicy pledge indeed (with lots of sanctions and stuff to balance things out). If the 5-dot version is granted, then the "parents" are considered to be both members of the same seeming as the changeling granting the pledge boon. Gentry can "choose" the "parent seeming(s)" for the 5-dot level.
My favourite Changeling movie is Spirited Away(Sen to Chihiro no kamimkakushi) by Hayao Miazaki.
His other movies are great inspirations too, but this one is the most Changeling-like

As for books, the The Wee Free Men by Terry Prattchet is an obvious choise. Tiffany Aching, a witch (in trainging, at least) sets out to save her little brother from the Queen of the Faries. Realy amazing book, and the other 2 books about Tiffany is also great, if not dealing with the Changeling theme so directly.
I highly recomend them all, both for inspiration and because they are really good books.

Now it's your turn. Bring us inspirational eyecandy
Help!

Okay, so I thought I had a pretty good grasp on the Hedge, but as I start to actually run a game, I realize I don't. I'm hoping some of you veterans can lend me your insight.

The big thing that's throwing me is finding an exit to the Hedge. I have a lot of questions. The book says that you can get out through an activated doorway even if it isn't open, or you can make a new doorway. That last bit is what really throws me. Just about any "bound space" in the mortal world can become a gateway into the Hedge. So what does a potential doorway look like from the Hedge side? For that matter, what does an activated doorway look like from the Hedge side? Does it look like it does in the mortal world?

And how does this (or does it at all?) tie into the also confusing concept of staying "close to" the mortal world, or keeping the mortal world "in sight." Once the doorway you passed through is closed, how is it possible to keep the mortal world "in sight"?
I like Lost a lot, but there's one thing I don't like; the replacing of Arts (which were very flexible by definition) with Contracts (Which feel very limited overall). Have there been any attempts to port them over?

Thanks.

Keep it to 4 sentences or less. You do not need to simply state the facts of the character, but stick to the meat of the concept.

Part of the purpose is to have a list of NPC ideas that novice and experienced Storytellers can draw upon for their chronicles to make things more interesting.

"Saint" Chrissy Stonewall: Intended for use in a New York City chronicle. She (?) has pure white skin, dresses in white gowns and always signs her name with the quotation marks.

The Shaking Man: Intended for use in a San Francisco chronicle. The one known as "The Shaking Man" appears as a man in a state of perpetual shaking. The freehold says that he was taken in the quake of 1906 and returned during the quake of 1989. Oracles say that he will once again leave as he did the first time.

Fae-ify it!

I was thinking, and I thought it'd be interesting to see what people made of this idea.
Take a show or comic or novel, and see how people alter it in different ways to match Changeling.

As an example, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Turtles are a Changeling fractured by the Gentry into four distinct entities, but their memories were not strong enough to return to a human form and so they stayed in the Hedge as a four-sided Goblin.

Splinter is a dual Beast (Although I don't know which)/Wizened Soldier Who was transformed into a rat and made to fight other animals, both small and large. His mien is that of Splinter, obviously.

Shredder is an exiled Gentry, With the Title "Growling Man of Blades".

What would somebody make of Thundercats? Or.. Ye gods, something like Toxic Avenger or the ilk.
Ages ago, I posted a request for general input on a campaign idea I have been tinkering with in the old boards. My lack of follow up on replies (Sorry about that), additional work I’ve done on the campaign and the fact that the boards were overhauled, loosing the thread has prompted me to post the request once again. Now, some friends of mine have expressed interest in the idea, so here I, trying to make the damn thing work.

Inspired by the lovely persona 3, I have been tinkering with an idea about a changeling campaign that takes places on a archetypical English boarding school, where the players arrive and become students at the start of the campaign.

The first part of the campaign focuses on the players exploring the extremely old and tradition bound school, its dark and obscure past, its host of strange characters and merciless cliques, Players should hopefully get closer and closer to the truth about the school, than an ancient changeling freehold lies hidden within the school and that several of the school’s inhabitants are actually not entirely human.

The players are exposed to more and more strange events, all courtesy of the internal fights of the freehold and the lost’s fight against enemies from the hedge. At some point, I had the thought that a loyalist, hidden inside the freehold would lead the players into the woods outside the academy as a sacrifice to his gentry master (Whether all the players end up, the playthings of the same true fae, remains to be seen). I have this idea of a warm midsummer night turning into a Blair witch project experience as the player characters are chased by “things” through the dark woods,

Then they suddenly awaken roughly the place, but now it is not night, but day and it is no longer summer but winter. They make their way back to the school and now has to make their way back into the social fabric of the school, find out which senior member of staff/changelig court official to work with and so on.

The bit that is troubling me and always has troubled me about changeling is how changeling society interact with mortal society, how groups of changelings, like a freehold is connected to surrounding mortal community. In my campaign idea, the changelings live and walk among the students and most likely a majority of the teachers and staff at an old boarding school, how does this work? Suggestions wanted please!

I am currently considering two or rather three different scenarios: one is called the “Potter gambit” for obvious reasons: The four seasonal courts have ingrained themselves so deep into the very fabric of the school, that each of the four houses (Only or main) of the school are more or less synonymous with one of the four courts. In this model, several of the senior teachers and staff are changelings and each seasonal monarch is the headmaster or headmistress of one such house or at least firmly in control with whomever hold that title in their house. This indicate that all courts have members who are teachers and that a court isn’t necessarily confined to one group (teachers, students, staff, parents etc). Each seasonal king or queen is a senior member of the school’s academic staff and each takes control of the school for their appointed season, Autumn harvesting the fear of students before test around the new year, Winter taking in the sorrow and pain of being isolated in the dark part of the year, away from family and kin, while Spring practically showers in the joys and expectations of the young students of the school, especially when summer is coming up. Since many students go home for a while, during the holidays, Summer has less to work with but the school host several workshops and martial re-enactments of the area’s violent history and also get a lot out of the school’s competitive sports program, rugby being a changeling favourite. One idea, I like, is that because no headmaster has ever stayed for long, due to “unforeseen circumstances” the four housemasters takes turns, being acting headmaster, of course during their respective seasons. A threat might be a new headmaster (or mistress) who isn’t that easily persuaded and who might be an actual threat to the freehold.

The other model, called the “Interest group approach” or the “Masquerade model” that each court, like a clan of vampires have ingrained themselves into one of the major factions of the school. The Autumn court, ever academic and archaic, controls senior teachers opposing the newer teachers, lower staff and older students of the Spring Court. The staff, made up of the secretive Winter court are not seeing eye to with the aggressive and aristocratic Summer court, connected with the parents and former student’s organisation. This model means that Autumn calls the shots, Summer has been thrown out the door (and is trying very hard to get back in), Spring is looking for a way to break Autumn’s control and Winter is keeping a very low profile, while profiting of all the conflict, relishing the facet that staff might actually be running the place.

The third scenario I am considering is actually a variety of the first scenario, the “Potter gambit” jokingly referred to as the “Order of the Phoenix stratagem”. In this version, changelings hold a variety of post of the school, none of them terrible powerful. All changelings however, are members of the “Ancient History Appreciation Society” an academic and social club, focusing on studies of the area’s ancient and obscure history. The society is basically the local court

As I wrote above, any input and ideas would be welcome.

Doing so can be risky, of course. Effectively, the on who is bound to perform a favor is bound by Wyrd to perform some task of equivalent power at a later date. Favors are rated as lesser, medial and greater in power. The one who owes the favor is bound by Wyrd to grant it, so long as it is within the bounds of what is owed, when it is asked at that later date, or suffer a Curse sanction of the appropriate power, levied by the Wyrd itself.

Basically, my question is on the wording of, "at a later date." The mystic mumbo jumbo of the whole feel of the boon makes it seem as if the caller can call upon the boon as long as the pledge was made... Now my question is, lets say the deal was for greater beauty for a time of a month, as well as some other things, and the cost was a Favor "at a later date." Since the pledge itself only lasted a month, does the receiver of the favor have to claim it before the month is up, or can he attempt to claim it at any time, as long as the bargain was upheld? This may seem like a silly question, hehe.. sorry about that -_-

Metamorphosis: the return of the Kiasyd

So last night i was trying to think of a way to makea HedgeBar-Inn that drew in dreamers stuck in guilt ridden nightmares so as to have thier deams enacted on the stage for the amusment of the patrons dinning and watching the show.
_________________________________________________________

but then i started to think of the owner of the Inn came up with a great back story of an old maimed LSotUR, of a man who joined the LordSages as a vampire hunter to avenge the death of his wife a single mother he met after his durance{haven't really worked out how or why she was killed by vampz maybe borrowed money from a ghoul loanshark} well afew years after bliss Fate turned upon them and bite them in the neck hehehehehehe So the son wasthere wwhen the murder happened being about 5th-teen at the time Vows with his step father to avenge the mother sso some time passes let say from 1989-1993, and they ben some what successsful made a name for them selves in afew cities but still haven't found the one who killed the mother when Fate turns upon them again the Killer Returns but in this confertation the vampire embaces the stepson

so now loving the son with all his heart and just not finding it in whats left of his soul to kill the son he loves they strike a new Pact to veng not just the mother but the curse of unlife inflicted upon the son
the only part that applies to the story is "if you shall ever hurt me i'll be forcced to slay you " so then the day comes that the son goes into frenzyand turns upon the Father deciceds to spar ehis son that he staked ......... But he with draws from the life of hunting and with his son in a duffle sack headed into the Hedge to find a place he can live out the rest of his life in some what peace

but the LSotUR wouldn't leave him alone asthey dont want to sqander a resoure of vampiric knowledge made offers of the help and assisted in consturting the Inn as a heaven/library/storehouse for members of the LSotUR w/ the old man trusted as its carekeeper

now the KIASYD the son dwells in the basement of Inn in a stone coffin a metamorphosis is happen .........fed a study diet of changeling and hobgoblin blood something is bound to happen........now he is just a staked cadaver covered in a cocoon of bug webs caked in the blood of his feedings

___________________________________________

so now i need to work out a vampire in the Hedge but i dont have the VampCoreBook

but i'm trying to figure out how the VampiricSon is goiing to affect the Hedge and how the Hedge is going to affect him.
+any vamps who enter the Hedge or that are lost in the Hedge are drawn to the Inn
+how or can the vampire huant the grounds of the hollow using astal projection
+the psychoactive Hedge always cast the Inn in dusk and fog  [old manMOON:wyrd?-son:BP3}
+now by my understanding is that a vampire has to be BloodPotency 6 to creat his own bloodline, so if i spend six merits pts to bring his blood potency up to BP3 so can a vamp gain exp while stuck in tapor if it is able influance the Hedge thru his tapor dreams or the dreams of the patron who sleep in the Inn to manipulate the Inn's Patrons
Last session, we spent some time talking about their fetches, and played through their return to their old home town. I called the game a little shorter than I might otherwise have done, however, because I realized that the next big thing I'd like to see happen is for them to meet up with members of the local changeling community, and I didn't yet have any firm ideas about what the local freehold was like.

So, questions, about the freehold's basic nature aside, does anyone have any suggestions for interesting first encounters with them? I would assume most freehold would want to keep an eye out for new arrivals to the area, but I'm also not sure just how easy it would be for them to "spot" new changelings.

Recognizing that a Changeling doesn't choose their Durance, I've taken leeway in "stereotyping" myself, to consider in which "stories" a True Fae might feel I was destined to take part. Here's what I've come up with for each of the Seemings: As a Wizened, I'd almost certainly become a Chatelaine; I'm just too accommodating for the Gentry to pass up for a "yes-man."

Despite some gluttonous tendencies, I'd probably end up a Farwalker, not that I'm a natural outdoorsman, but if I were to become an Ogre and escape, it would be by simply walking away for a long, long time. Or, as one of the Fairest (certainly less likely than other Seemings), I'd probably become a Flamesiren or Bright One (my passion and beauty comes from deep within).

I love trees, so I'd be a Woodblood elemental if my natural tendencies were followed. More likely, though, I'd become Sandharrowed or Earthbones out of some spiteful Other's sense of humour--as one who lives in a desert somewhat against his will, I have an aversion for bare earth.

A Keeper might value my propensity for learning and make me an Antiquarian as a Darkling, or I might make a good Whisperwisp, given my skill in talking with others and my facility for keeping secrets.

Ultimately, though, if I were chosen for my most notable traits, I believe I'd end up as an avian Beast, more Cleareyes than Windwing.

In a Freehold ruled by the Seasonal Courts, I'd join the Winter Court, but I'd join the Court of the Day in a slavic-influenced Freehold, and I'd leave the Winter Court for the Sun Court were I ever to become aware of its existence. In any event, I'd pity courtiers of the Courts of Summer, Dusk, Moon or the North, and I'd mistrust (loathe?) Autumn, the Dawn Court, the East and the South.

I'm sure that I would maintain high Clarity.

How about you?

Are the properties\bonus that you get from hedgespinning a weapon added to whatever base weapon template you are creating or are they the base values themselves? say if you want to make a hedgespun Axe,will it have to automatically start at 2+ dots just to match the same stats as it´s mundane counterpart,or you can make a one dot version to add a bonus to the weapon template?
