I am fairly new to playing Hunter but not really new to playing RPG's in general. However, in a recent campaign my previous character kind of got into a bad situation since he used a pistol against a Vampire which didn't go over too well for two reasons. The first was it only did bashing damage, the second was the Vampire fled because it was close to the dawn. The big problem came when my character got arrested and life in prison due to neighbors hearing the gunshot and reporting it. Being that the other players aren't willing to break my character out and he has no parole, control of my character reverted to storyteller control and I was told to make a new one.

So now I am in the process of creating another character and was wondering if there was any benefit to taking the Archery merit when compared to firearms?

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any help and advice.
As they tend to be my favorite Hunter group, I really enjoyed reading it.

But, inspired by Assassin's Creed, I am thinking of changing it up a little and making an Ascending One for my group's next campaign. The concept is a modern, semi-reluctant assassin-warrior who is the last of his line and is forced into the vigil. My group has never used the Ascending Ones, though, so I don't know how they shake out in play.

Like in the Lucifuge thread, I would love to hear people's thoughts on the Ascending Ones' endowments. Which are overpriced and underpriced? Which are powerful, and which are useless? What ones in particular are favorites, and why? Which would be most helpful to make my character effective? How about stats/skills/merits?
That is what happens to a hunter when a vampire attempts to turn him?

If it's a lesser template than, by the rules, he should lose his hunter specific abilities and instead gain the vampire template. If it's a greater template (such as werewolf) than he would be immune and thus couldn't be turned.

I can't find a logical reason why a hunter couldn't be turned into a vampire (or awaken as a mage or discover they are a werewolf) but I still feel like hunter is a greater template. Plus the hunter template includes all these specific features (such as an extra skill specialization) and it would seem weird that being turned into a vampire takes those abilities away.

Hellraiser Eddy (Legend)

"I remember everything! I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday. I was barely seventeen, and I once killed a boy with a Fender guitar. I don't remember if it was a telecaster or a stradacaster, but I do remember that it had a heart of chrome and a voice like a horny angel. I don't remember if it was a telecaster or a stradacaster, but I do remember that it wasn't at all easy. It required the perfect combination of the right power chords and the precise angle from which to strike!

The guitar bled for about a week afterward, and the blood was so dark and rich, like wild berries. The blood of the guitar was Chuck Berry red. The guitar bled for about a week afterward, but it rung out beautifully, and I was able to play notes that I had never even heard before. So I took my guitar, and I smashed it against the wall! I smashed it against the floor! I smashed it against the body of a varsity cheerleader! Smashed it against the hood of a car! Smashed it against a 1981 Harley Davidson! The Harley howled in pain! The guitar howled in heat!

And I ran up the stairs to my parents' bedroom. Mummy and daddy were sleeping in the moonlight. Slowly I opened the door, creeping in the shadows right up to the foot of their bed. I raised the guitar high above my head, and just as I was about to bring the guitar crashing down upon the centre of the bed, my father woke up, screaming, "Stop! Wait a minute! Stop it boy! What do ya think you're doin'? That's no way to treat an expensive musical instrument!"

And I said: "Goddamnit daddy! You know I love you. But you got a hell of a lot to learn about rock 'n roll!"
-------
Irrationality

APPEARANCE
----------
Edward Gillan was possibly attractive once, but life as a rockstar and undead killing machine have left him a desiccated, barely human looking ghoul, somewhere between Iron Maiden's mascot Eddie and Keith Richards. While this obviously leaves him with a little trouble getting a date on a Saturday night, any social penalties he suffers are negated when he's performing, or among fans. Considering he spends most of his downtime feeding his guitar's addiction, this is rarely an issue. He typically dresses in torn jeans and studded or spiked biker leathers, sometimes exchanging the leathers for a worn jean work vest and a t shirt depicting some metal band. He always carries his guitar with him. When he kills with it, any blood spatters soak directly into the instrument, staining the paint a deep blood red.

HISTORY
-------
The story of the guitar player who stands at the crossroads and offers his soul to the Devil for the ability to play with inhuman skill is an old one. Sometimes he's a blues man, sometimes a rock n' roller, sometimes a metal-head. No less than Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page is rumored to have actually done it. Even Bruce Springsteen recently wrote about the Jersey Devil, who asked his daddy to "make me a guitar out of skin and a human skull."

In the World of Darkness that guitar exists, though it changes form and owner from generation to generation. Currently, it takes the form of a black and chrome custom electric guitar with an axe shaped base and a neck resembling a spinal cord, and resides in the hands of a man who calls himself "Hellraiser Eddy". But the Devil requires more than just one's soul from this bargain. He requires blood - not blood given freely, but taken violently. The guitar - Eddy's "axe" - drinks deeply of this blood and transforms it into sweet music.

The deal proved to be more than Edward Gillan bargained for. A high school loner, he was targeted by popular kids and even by the school administration for wearing black and listening to heavy metal. He channeled his anger into his guitar playing and before long was talented enough to make a name for himself among the local band scene. But it wasn't enough. Edward wanted vindication against all those who ever disrespected him. He wanted to be the best guitar player in the world. And like most teenagers, he wanted it now, without having to practice. After hearing the legend of the devil's guitar, Edward set out for the nearest dirt crossroads, cut his hand, and let the blood pool on the ground. Then he called for the Devil.

Whether whatever answered actually was the Prince of Darkness, or just some lesser demon, or something else entirely, no one can say. In any case, a gust of wind kicked up a powerful dust storm, and when it settled, the guitar appeared in the middle of the crossroads, the edge of the base stuck in the ground. Edward walked over, pulled the guitar from the earth, and Hellraiser Eddy was born.

Eddy murdered eighteen people and released three albums to critical acclaim, before a police SWAT team ended his life for the first time. Thereafter, once every year on the anniversary of his death, a "previously unreleased album" would be mailed to his former record label in a plain manila envelope with no postmark. Shortly after the release of these albums, sightings of the supposedly dead rock star would spring up across the US, to the point where they gained as much notoriety as sightings of Elvis. Of course, Elvis sightings rarely leave a bloody trail of corpses in their wake, so it's understandable they would pale in comparison to those of Hellraiser Eddy.
Hoping for a little advice.
I'm new to WoD and started playing Hunter recently (but not new to rpging)

My character is heading towards joining/becoming part of Lucifuge.
I know the answer may be 'it depends'-- but could I get some advice on what set of Castigations I should pick?
And which stats I should up to make the most of that set.

Similarly, which if any, are viewed as underpowered/overpriced? (be it actual affect, probability of use, cheaper merits to accomplish the same thing, whatever)

Thanks,
I wanted them to deal with human lackeys before tackling full-on supernatural stuff, and while reading Glen Cook's Chronicles of the Black Company (specifically Shadows Linger), I had the idea of a supernatural being who buys fresh corpses for a good bit of money. I'd have the players stumble upon this kind of corpse-trafficking business and from there I guess I can take the story in various directions, depending on how they react or how they come in contact with the people who sell bodies to the baddy.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of creep ( might be into that kind of activity/need dead bodies. *Dark Passenger: Roll Resolve+Composure any time in the presence of a Vampire. If the roll fails, the subject goes into a frenzy as though failing a Predator's Taint roll. Works regardless of subject's status as Mortal.
**Situational Mutism (Major): If subject is kept in a stressful situation (ie, an interrogation), the subject must make a Resolve+Composure roll. If the roll fails, the subject loses the capacity to speak until removed from the situation. The roll is repeated every hour after the second, with a cumulative -1 penalty to the pool for each hour. If the roll is ever botched, the subject loses the capacity to speak for the rest of the day. Rolls continue as long as the subject is in the continued stressful situation, even if she's already failed a roll. Multiple botches indicate multiple days of speechlessness.

Melody Kell was always a victim. She was the family whipping girl, picked on constantly by just about everybody. She grew up without friends or a proper peer group, and as such, quickly became a bit off. She clung to abusive relationships, trying to rationalize the growing rage which slowly built inside her. She married young, to a financially and emotionally abusive man. When she had her daughter, her husband abandoned her. She just got angrier. This rage finally came to a head when she was attacked one night by a strange looking man. She killed him by burning his head on a gas-range, and was shocked when he burned quickly to a pile of ashes.
In the coming months, she ended up killing five more Fangs. It got to the point where she could pick one out from any distance, and she learned the tricks to them. She learned garlic doesn't do shit. She learned running water just means they have to wade. She learned bullets are just about useless. And she learned fire kills 'em like nothing else. And everything she learned earned her scars.
More recently, though, she finds herself teetering on the verge of mental collapse. Between the constant pressure of single parenthood with her new-found responsibilities to the people of her city, she has little time to sleep. Ever since the Changelings began to appear in her neighborhood, whispering that they were going to take her daughter away from her, things have only gone down hill. Her dreams haunt her, she's gathering enemies both mundane and supernatural at an incredible speed, and for some reason, everybody thinks she knows something about 'the owls'.
She could never tell them: The owls are a part of her, now. And they want to see the Fangs burn.
The Metal is best summed up as a combination of the Lucifuge and Aegis Kai Doru, in that their endowments include both artifacts and ritual powers. For inspiration, think of the musical stylings of Tenacious D, as well as the cartoon Metalocalypse and the forthcoming game Brutal Legend. Listening to any adventure metal, black metal, or death metal should get you in the right state of mind as well.

History:

Centuries ago, in the days of hallowed antiquity, a viking skald made a deal with a demon. In return for his soul, the skald would recieve power unimagined, with wich he would slay a band of viking warriors who had humiliated him. The demon granted him the essence of his demonic power, and the skald used it in the way he knew best, through music.

With instrument in hand, he bagan to play, and summoned forth a choir of demons, some with their own infirnal instruments, and the first metal band was created. With the power of the Hellfury coarsing through his fingers and tongue, he rained destruction down on the helpless vikings who had incited his wrath.

After, the arch demon retured to collect the skalds soul. The skald however, was drunk on his new power, and defied the fiend. It attempted to banish the lesser demonic choir, but the power of the Hellfury bound them tightly, and with them playing backup, the skald defeated the arch demon, banishing it forever to the Pit.

The skald lived for many years after the epic battle with the arch demon, for with even the smallest portion of the Hellfury in him, he was without peer. The skald came to master the Hellfury, and found that it was not required for a demon to bestow the power, but rather it could be taught to one with the potential to learn, and the skald taught many students in his long life.

This caused outrage in the Pit, and the fiends could do nothing to stop mankind from tapping into their limitless powers. Instead, they sought to undermine it, and secretly they tought other forms of music to mankind. Music that would warp and bend the minds of mortals, granting them more power and influence, in hope that they would soon be strong enough to brake mankinds use of the Hellfury through main force.

When those that carried on the legacy of the skald learned of the demon's mechinations, they banded together and formed what is now known as The Metal, a world wide conspiracy of hunters that battle against the agents of the Pit and their corrupting influence on popular culture. Over the years, they have expanded to combat all creatures of darkness, becoming bastions against the night, and raining down Pure Rock Fury on any who would prey on humanity.

The Truth.

Almost all music is product of the Pit, meant to influence man kind into giving power to the arch demons. Punk rock, grunge, techno, new wave... these and more are all creations of foul demons. however, the Metal are not the only ones to tap into the powers of the Hellfury, at the core of every kind of music, there are those that are pure to that genre, but these men and women are not included in the ranks of the Metal, rather, they are independents who have found their own way to power. But the Metal are cheif amongst these mortals.

While most hunters that belong to The Metal follow the tradional patterns, which mundane bands have been styling themselves after for years, this is not nessessary. The music played by these hunters has changed many times over the centuries, so it is attitude and ability that matters more then the style of music one plays. In modern times, there are many veriations to be found within the Metal, a good example to help understand this is the way Apocalyptica uses cellos to play their music, or Tenacious D's use of accustics.

Endowments:

The Gear:
The equipment the Metal uses in their Vigal is a combination of ancient midievil weapons and musical instruments. Both are endowed with the power of the Hellfury to aid and augment the hunters power.

While the truely ancient Gear is often the most powerful, it is not always the case. There is no shortage of Gear to go around, because these objects can be made at any time. To do so, one of the Metal summons a demon from the Pit, and challenges him in the ancient ritual of the Rock Off. Those new to the Metal often have more experienced hunters do this for them, or they borrow the Gear from another if they feel they can do it themselves. As the demons can not, by nature, refuse the challenge of a Rock Off, all one need to is summon the fiend and speak the words of the challenge. There is no little danger in this however, as ones soul is forfit if he looses. Should he win though, the demon is bound for a number of days and must do whatever the hunter requires durring that time. This includes crafting Gear.

Gear can be almost anything, from leather jackets that can not be pierced by bullets, swords axes and guns magic in nature, wicked guitars that need no amps, and even demonic motercycles and hotrods. All of these are crafted of the essence of Pure Rock Fury, and stand above their mundane counterparts in every way. Each can channel the powers of the Hullfury, and as stated above, the guitars need no amps, microphones need no speakers, and vehicals need no fuel.

Riffs:

Riffs are the result of channeling Hellfury through an instrument. Gear is not strictly required to preform Riffs, but mundane guitars need amps, and accustics are less effective, unless the hunter specializes in that form of instrument(Take for example, the D). Using mundane instruments puts the hunter at a -3 penalty on all Riff rolls, and the Riffs require twice the normal willpower.

The following are but a few examples of Riffs. There are far more, but I havn't come up with them yet. Also note that I havn't been able to come up with cleaver names for all the Riffs, so they're subject to change. Some Riffs require specific instruments, which will be noted.

Melt Your Face Off (Guitar)
The hunter plays his guitar with blazing speed. The targets blood begins to heat, causing damage, and can sometimes lead to its face being litterally melted off.

Pummeling Precussion. (Drums)
(Drums can be difficult to carry into battle. Some hunters use a single snare, carried like a marching band drummer, or small tom toms attatched ones belt. A skilled channeler of Hellfury can produce the effect of a full drumset on either. Also, there are reports of a hunter using demon crafted drum sticks, which create the effect of a drumset when hit on any surface, or even in the air alone.)
The drummer preforms a rapid and violent staccato on his drum(s), with each beat, the target is hit by an invisible fist.

Deep Rumble (Bass)
The hunter plays a bass line that is increadibly low and menescing. The ground shakes and the target is overcome with nausia(if it feels such things) as it's innerds are violently vibrated. The more power applied, the more the target is shaken, to the point of causing damage. Powerful basists are able to cause small earthquakes with this power, or focus it to shake down buildings. Some have even reported vibrating a target so hard their very molicules came appart... quite violently.

Loud Enough to Wake The Dead (Vocals, but could also be preformed with a guitar or bass, if the wielder is skilled enough)
The hunter sings a single note that raises in pitch and volume. At the peak, he thrusts a fist into the air, and several skeletons burst from the ground around him to do his bidding. Actual corpses are not required, as they are made from Pure Rock Fury, so technicly, they can take any shape, and they don't even need to burst from the ground, but members of The Metal would never pass up the chance for the dramatic flair.

More notes on the Metal...

While I'm not claiming that Jack Black and Kyle Gass are members of The Metal, they have two songs very important to the conspiracy, though it is possible they stumbled uppon them and made them their own.

Tribute is, in fact, a true tale, passed through the generations of The Metal, about the greatest, most epic battle ever fought in the history of the conspiracy.

And of course, the song The Metal, is a veriation of an ancient battle hymn.

That's all I've been able to come up with. I am, as always, open to suggestions.

I have a brilliant idea for a next possible game. I'm sure it's been thought of before, but not by me so it's all new and awesome: in Hunter: the Vigil fallen/rogue hunters and hunters who have taken a Slasher undertaking are presented as antagonists. What if the actual Hunters were the enemy?

I'm thinking of making it just a blue book game, I doubt I'll even give the main characters Hunter professions. The main characters are forensic detectives, cops, autopsists, and such who are on the trail of someone big - a real nasty serial killer with a near indiscernible M.O. They eventually busts into the guy's house (as in, safehouse) and find all sorts of twisted things: relics, tokens, fetishes, azoth-imbued items, photographs, newspaper clippings of all his kills, security cameras obtained illegally, big computer with a killer tracker/stalker function, silver bullets and daggers, wooden stakes, and occult books on goetia (to name a few). Who the hell is this guy?

Then when the PCs eventually catch the guy in the act they deliver him to a psychologist for figuring out. The guy isn't too messed up; in game terms: nothing less than a morality 5, maybe just a major tell, no derangements, no Slasher undertaking. But...he is that messed up. He has to be. What's with all the weird oddities in his apartment? Why's he killed all these people seemingly unrelated to each other? Does he really believe ghosts and monsters are real?

What happens when he's thrown away into the Asylum and a vicious werewolf begins to prowl? How does this murderer get away with blurred photographs and videos (lunacy) and cannibalism (for essence)? Are the PCs really going to ask that other serial killer for help? What the hell's going on?

Where do your Monsters come from?

Hi,
I am organizing some unusual hunts- from Perverbial, Collection of Horrors, the Hunter Horror Recognition Guide, all of the SAS and several original ideas. It won't be your usual hack and slash, so come prepared for some unique encounters.

Currently our city, Salem, has a few established Hunters although only one established cell. The others (Frank [Tier One], Thomas [Lucifuge], Jesse [Taskforce: Valkyrie]) have been freelancing, hooking up when they find a hunt particularly interesting. These lone Hunters would like a real cell of thier own and hopefully, your Hunter would like to join them in creating it.

You are free to make a Tier One, Lucifuge or TF:V if these appeal to you most. Feel free to bring in the first Cherion, VASCU or another type that you feel like writing. Multi- faction cells are possible, all the better stories they'll make.

All books and SAS are owned by myself, so use all of the Hunter toolbox. For a limited time you can come in with Tactics.

Story wise:

The stories availiable to the cells this month is the SAS Murder Will Out (the rush to stop the Calculator!). There's also "Getting her back', the seed released for hunting a ghost that kidnaps a child close to the cell. The last thing on the white board right now is from Perverbial, a unique case where a young woman insists something is stalking her- and its something no one will expect.

The benefit of this endowment, apart from statistically being exactly
like a flamethrower, is that it sends vampires into an automatic fear
frenzy upon seeing it...which a mundane flamethrower stands good odds
of doing anyway. The vampire tries to escape as fast as its able, which
can be pretty damn fast.

The hiccup here is that a flamethrower doesn't have a particularly long range that's accurate.

And I think it's safe to assume that any vampire with a lick of sense
is NOT going to stick around long enough for a hunter to actually employ the primed and ready flamethrower.

I think the weapon is an okay idea; just not the kind I'd spend five merit dots on in play. Is there anyone here who has found it to be worth the price of admission? Am I completely wrong in my assessment?
For additional reference, here's a well done though highly highly fabricated wikipedia reference:
And to the marble hornets movies, here's the intro-

Disclaimer- any info claiming to be related to the Slender Man that says he's anything other than a made up thing is lying or badly misinformed. He's a made up monster all the way. But an intriguing made up monster, notwithstanding. So, read, think, and enjoy.

Good hunting.
