Not entirely accurate. It is possible to make a Solar "healer" using errata'd Medicine Charms, but it's pretty costly for what it is. There certainly is no "healing class" in the game, though, which I think quickly throws such players for a loop. "What do you mean I can't just carry around a bunch of healing potions" is a common reaction when I introduce new players.

Re: How to turn DnD players into Exaltamaniacs

Maese Mateo:

Chuck Norris?

Is just a funny internet meme.

I would bump this one up higher on the list. It's a very easy way to have people shown the differences in Exalted instead of being told about them (or getting them to read the core book, which, inexplicably, some people find a chore).

Re: How to turn DnD players into Exaltamaniacs

Having converted quite a few D&D players over to Exalted, I find one of the most attractive aspects of Exalted for them is how malleable the scene is when it comes to the action. D&D players are so entrenched in their 10 ft. x 10 ft. stone corridors it can be quite a surprise when they suddenly find that they can put a chandalier right in the middle of it just by saying so. Most times that's what gets them hooked; it gives them more comraderie with the ST, whereas in D&D, the relationship with the DM is more adversarial.

On the opposite side of the coin, most D&D players have a hard time realizing just how powerful they truly are in Exalted. They're used to being afraid of kobolds and goblins and carefully rationing their HPs; you kinda have to prod them to wade into the middle of a group of extras and commence hostilities. But once they discover that they can make that group of extras into hamburger with a couple of stunts, they get into it.

Re: How to turn DnD players into Exaltamaniacs

Psychotropic:

the theoretical love child of Bruce Lee and Jesus Christ.

Chuck Norris?

Re: How to turn DnD players into Exaltamaniacs

The major selling points for me between the two systems are:

1. Everyone gets to kick ass and look cool doing it. Yeah, there's 'cleric/healer', 'fighter', 'rogue', 'wizard', etc. analogs but at no point is the 'fighter' going to feel useless after 6th level or the '1st level wizard' going to run out of spells and sit around picking his nose for hours. If they play 4e, point out how every character can do more than repeat the same 4 moves every single fight.

2. Kicking ass is less about dice rolls and more about looking cool. Explain how the stunting system works then point out how cool it is that you can actually DO the stunts from your favorite action flicks and get a bonus on the roll for it rather than 'ok, roll a d20... you miss'. Or hit and roll your piddling 1d8 while the wizard needs to grow three extra hands to hold his damage dice.

3. Yes, Creation has an 'Elminster', several 'Darth Vaders' and a bunch of other signature characters. The difference is: You get to kick their asses because the setting itself dictates that your characters are more awesome than the theoretical love child of Bruce Lee and Jesus Christ.

4. Sick of alignment getting in the way of your character? Screw black and white morality. Creation is painted in shades of gray and you get to repaint it whatever colour you want.

5. Three words: Social Combat System. Yes, the 'bard' might just be more effective than killing everything for once!

6. Game balance shmame balance. If you're not surfing on nuclear missiles at the head of an army of giant robots while dueling a goth loli with a giant scythe, ur doin' it wrong! Lighten up and have some FUN!
7. Tell them to check out 'Exalted's Order of the Stick' Keychain of Creation at http://keychain.patternspider.net/ and see if they dig it.

Re: How to turn DnD players into Exaltamaniacs

SibeliusVassal:

The Ubergamer in me just screamed a violent as hell scream. I just feel the need to correct this bass ackward statement. You are the template wizard if and only if you choose to be. You can create a specialist that uses only ice based spells or fire, lightning, force, acid or pretty much any combo you can think of. Saying that there is no difference between any character of the same class is like saying all fighters use swords and all barbarians use axes or all bards use the harp. All of those are seriously false and to even say that they are is an affront to the grandfather of all modern RPGs and a disgrace to all gamers that actually know anything about the systems that they play.

Yeah, that really sets them apart. The spells they use. Right.

I like how you use the term "Grandfather". Grandfathers usually end up shitting themselves and dying in a home.

I think the point that he was trying to make is that "A Wizard is a Wizard, but Exalted says you can be a martial artist and a wizard and an archer from the start". In D&D, yeah... you can make yourself a multiclass character, but try to make a fighter/assassin. Also, the abilities that some of the classes get are often worthless. Exalted offers you the chance to pick and choose most of your traits from the start, without worrying about meeting criteria multiple levels later.
