I usually don't even look at a parents favored purviews or attributes when designing a Scion, just their associated abilities as I never liked the idea of a Scion being a carbon copy of mom or dad. While were on the topic, how about adoption? Personally I don't think I'd ever go the adoption route unless one of
the non child bearing gods looked really appealing for a concept. I
even like the idea of the minor gods like Thrudd, Modi and Magni taking
pride in their kin and raising them themselves.

I have been examining the Scion system rather closely for a few weeks now, and one obvious unbalance that pops out at me is how Epic Attributes scale at higher power levels. This leads to the automatic successes totally overshadowing any dice rolled, and thus resulting in a lot of situations where you either win or lose soley based on automatic successes on either part.

To illustrate this, we imagine two divine gunmen firing at each other. The goal is simply to hit the other person, why would one use a gun except in cases where you're not supposed to cause damage? One of our theoretical gunslingers has Epic Dexterity 3, and the other dito at 2. While this is a grave disadvantage for the lesser of the two, it can reasonably be bridged by skill or luck. After all, rolling a die pool of 8 or so yields a fairly high variance.

However, if the two contestants are Gods of Sniping Other Gods, and want to settle who gets the title by a friendly gunfight, things look rather different. Let us assume that one of the gods has Epic Dexterity 8 and the other 9. This gives a 8 success difference on attacks, as well as a difference of 8 in DVs. Assuming a 14 dice pool, 8 successes more than needed to hit someone of his own level of Dexterity is not even remotely likely. Actually, doing some quick napkin math, hitting someone of your own Epic Dexterity is not even that likely, but that is at least doable.

Here, at last, comes the revelation: Why not decrease the scaling of epic attributes across the board? It is not at all reasonable that a scion with one more point of Epic Dexterity than another should be hittable (albeit at some difficulty) at heroic levels, while being completely untouchable as a god.

Finally, the crux of the matter. What new scaling would be reasonable to implement? The difference in auto successes should still be noticable, but should not be the only factor determining a potential hostile encounter.

1) What ability do brass knuckles use, melee or brawl? I can see the argument for both.

2) For the purposes of Divine Wrath, does a brass knuckle count as unarmed? Again, I can see both situations.

Thanks in advance!
Their infernal equivalent, tentatively called the Fallen, will be covered in a separate thread. This is, of course, deeply non-canonical. I'd appreciate it if people would restrict themselves to constructive feedback in this thread; it's perfectly reasonable to put forth arguments that such a pantheon has no place in Scion, but this thread isn't the place for that argument. :)
I'm going to lower his epic Strength to a 9 or 10. His hammer has a special power to allow Ultimate Strength feats using it for hitting, damage, etc...But Thor cannot Lift. His son Magni is said to be even stronger than Thor. In the books they list him lower. I'm giving Magni Epic Strength 11 (due to his Half-giant status) even if his legend is only a 10 or so. Magni can perform Ultimate Strength without a weapon, Lifting, punching, etc... He is the God of Strength for the Aesir.

#2 I'm thinking of lowering All Gods Legends to Legend 9 or 10 tops.
To me with all the Gods with Ultimate Attributes they can defeat the Titan Avatars too easily by the rules. Lowering their Legend is a good way for them to need to band together to fight an Titan Avatar. With special Relics/Birthrights of the gods that allow Ultimate/Avatar status at a price usually.
Lets hear How you may or have already changed the setting/gods/pantheons for your own games.

Before the big change on the forums, there was an entry for a gun relic named something like "Bacchanalia" and it carried a power similar to Pan's power of the same name. If no one remembers, I can always just redesign it myself. How many dots would you say that ability would be? It would work much the same way Eros/Anteros works, with the same dice rolls and everything, but with Pan's power instead. Any idea?

Simplified Mass Combat

Exalted and Scion Mass Combat is overally complex and problematic. However, I think its heart is in the right place when dealing with the benefit of having groups of mortal followers. I was thinking of using a simplified version for Scion.

Here's what I have:

Statistics
Magnitude - 1 to 10 as set out in Scion Companion
Power - 1 to 9 as set out in Scion Companion, though normally it won't be more than 5. Also, Followers have a Power equal to their rating
Combat - divide attack roll by 2
Damage - divide damage roll by 2
Armour - Armour

Special Characters
A unit in Mass Combat may have special characters up to its Magnitude. One special character must be commander. These special characters can take actions seperately. However, all special character's abilities are capped by the Commander's Command Ability.

Combat
The commander (or one special character selected by the commander) gets the following bonuses in combat when attacking with the unit:

Attack = + Magnitude + Power + Combat in successes
DV = + Magnitude (+ Combat in melee)
Damage = + Magnitude + Damage in successes
Soak = + Armour

A unit's Magnitude drops by 1 when it takes damage equal to the unit member's Health levels + Power. When this happens the unit must make a roll using Power or the commander's highest appropriate Virtue at difficulty 1 (modified as per Scion Companion). Fail results in the unit being Inactive Speed 5. A botch results in the unit loosing additional Magnitude.

If a unit wishes to attack a commander or special character, itdoes not add its Magnitude to Attack.
after the fist Titan war ten pantheons chose to work together to create 10 relics. each was made with a drop of Ichor from a member of each of these ten Pantheons. and each ring was made by one of the pantheons. each ring is a two dot relic that grants acsess to a purview and has a one dot power. alone the ring grants the first dot of the given purview. if two or more are togeather with the same scio. it grants a combanation of dots in pervews granted by the rings limeted by the scions legand. once chosen the scion can not change them unless he/she gets another ring (eg. a scion has the rings of air and earth. he can eather have the first dot of both or the second dot of one or the other if he is of legend 3 or higher)
the ten rings are as fallows
the ring of Luner Might (Moon and 1dot power)
this was created by the amatsukami
Ring of eturnal darkness (darkness and 1dot power)
this was created by the pesedjet
ring of disorder ( chaos and 1dot power)
this ring was created by the atlantian
the ring of Order ( Law and 1dot power)
this ring created by celestial bureaucracy
ring of the here after (death and 1dot)
this ring created by the Loa
Ring of life (Health and 1 dot power)
this ring created by the Atzlanti
skymasters ring (air and 1 dot power)
this ring created by the dodekatheon
thirst quencher (water and 1dot)
this ring created by the dava
the world ring (earth and 1dot)
this created by the tuatha de dannan
the Inferno Cerclet (fire 1dot power)
this ring created by the aesir

it is said No scion has held more then three of these rings at one time. but its beleaved that a singel scion with all ten could rise to chalange even the strongest of gods and even the titans them selfes

(please tell me what you all think. sorry about spelling btw)

It was very fun, but I'm not entirely sure where to go with it. I'm coming to you guys to recount humorous stories, and to beg for help.
WARNING:The following is not meant to be even a little serious. I'm just taking the potentially ridiculous aspects of the game and the utter ridiculousness of my players. It involves characters from the Homestar Runner website showing up as gods in the Cartoon Pantheon (I know that doesn't make sense, but it doesn't matter for the game so I don't care right now) and, if I get to this stage, dragon-riding terrorists crashing into the Louvre.

Okay, warnings out of the way, let's meet our current cast of demigod-level characters:

-Sam, technically known as Samantha, last name unknown. An amnesiac (strictly for plot purposes) Scion of Raphael, the Archangel of healing (mad props to you guys who gave me the links to the Divine Holy Host and such things) who also happens to be a terrorist that attacks cosmetics companies. Raphael only Visited her because he mistakenly thought that learning about her gods-given destiny to help people would cool her down. She basically controls the huge hacker network known as Anonymous (yes, I'm a bad enough GM that I let my players do that)

-Olette Greenvale, Scion of Aphrodite. And an odd one at that. She's not ugly, not at all, but she could be described as "unconventionally attractive." She's beautiful in a way that doesn't fit in with society's image of beauty, and having it hammered into her head that she's "ugly" for her whole life has taken a toll on her self-esteem. Aphrodite recognized that she really needed help, and appointed her a divine therapist who also serves as her guide.

-"Kristian Swallowtail" (not his real name, but the only name he's ever answered to) a stripper and Scion of Aengus, the Celtic god of love and such madness. He's probably the least fucked up of the band as it is now. Also, he's gay more or less to the point of being so stereotypical, it's not even really a stereotype anymore. His main relic is, ridiculously enough, a magic thong. Like I said, this game is very strange, or going to be.

Have to wrap this up, as my computer is fading on me (curse the bonehead that left the charger somewhere impossible to find! Even though it was probably me...) but I'll post the events of the first session soon.

I leave you with a quick question:are there any methods by which a mortal can identify scions published somewhere I'm not aware of? Long story short, a side character is a mortal who can see Scions for what they really are.

RAGNAROK APPROACHES!!!!

My group meets on Friday night. Ragnarok is coming and it's time for our players to fight the final battle. I was wondering if any of you have any good tips on how to have this battle play out.

My plan is to break the battle into three phases. Phase One, our players just take on the vanguard of the enemy force attacking Asgard. We will all take various defensive positions and just take on all comers. Phase Two, our players will encounter and engage the fated archenemies I've established for each of them in one-on-one duels. I actually have a Battle Wheel printed up for each and every one of them. I'll get into more detail about the archenemies in a bit. Phase Three is after Asgard falls and the final battle between our Band and Surtur takes place on Midgard.

I'm mostly looking for general advice on how to keep the action flowing as well as keeping track of everything as far as Phase One goes. For Phase Two, I'm wondering how to present each character's Fated foe and how to make those the most interesting. Phase Three is pretty straightforward, but any ideas you may have about how to make that interesting would be appreciated.

Now as for those Fated foes:
1.) Our female Scion of Njord will face Thokk, who used to be Baldur's wife Nanna before she tried to stop his resurrection to keep him in Helheim with her. The Scion of Njord has since become Baldur's new lover, and Thokk wants her dead. Basically a "You stole my man, bitch!" kind of feud. The Scion of Njord favors Water and Frost Boons, if you need to know.
2.) Our male Scion of Tyr had a sexual encounter with a jarnvidjur, who has since given birth to a son who wants daddy dead. The kid is modeled heavily after the Tyrants in Resident Evil. He'll favor Health (the negative aspects mostly), War, and Fire. The Scion of Tyr favors War and Earth.
3.) Our male Scion of Odin will face Nidhogg. During our mission into Helheim, Nidhogg attacked our Band with his four sons. The Scion of Odin killed one of Nidhogg's sons in the battle. By "killed" I mean "Blew his entire freaking head off and showered daddy with the gore!" Classic father's vengeance scenario. The Scion of Odin favors Moon, Animal (Wolf), and his bow and phoenix-feathered arrows which explode.
4.) Our male Scion of Loki will engage Angrboda. When we were in the Dark Forest, we killed the Erl King, who I'm calling Angrboda's son. Again, mother's vengeance. Angrboda will be bringing a sizeable force of her mutated demon children to the battle. Whether or not they'll aid her isn't yet decided. The Scion of Loki favors Fire, Darkness, and Chaos.
5.) Our male Scion of Heimdall will take on the Frost Giant Skrymir, who I created for the story. I'm saying he's Utgard-Loki's son. In my game, Utgard-Loki was in fact the mastermind behind Baldur's death. There were two Loki's, Fate likes to play with names. Ergo, Utgard-Loki took Loki's role in the Ragnarok prophecy. Meaning he was chained in the cave with the snake, and now he is Fated to be Heimdall's foe at Ragnarok. Skrymir is targeting Heimdall's son out of filial loyalty. This is a blood feud between two families. The Scion of Heimdall favors Sky and Guardian.
6.) Finally, our male Scion of Freya will face Fafnir. During one of our missions, we prevented Fafnir from opening a portal that would allow a Fire Giant force to invade and conquer the Eastern Seaboard of the US. In the battle, the Scion of Freya dealt Fafnir a most grievous blow. Fafnir also hates him because he, like his mother, is much loved by the Alfar, who are obviously natural enemies to the svartalfar. The Scion of Freya favors Fire, Animal (Hawk), and Health.

I don't need these battles mapped out for me. I've already got a pretty good idea of how I'm going to do this, but I like to make sure I've considered every option before I proceed. I'm kind of shopping for options, here. How would you present these battles?

(Epic Charisma)

Prerequisite: Crowd Control

The Scion steps up, clears his throat, and addresses the area at large. This Knack allows the Scion to speak to a very large number of people at once without electronic amplification. In order to activate this ability, the Scion must step up onto a raised location, a place symbolically related to delivering speeches, and then make some sort of noise to draw attention. He can choose to speak with everyone in the area or just one particular category of people (such as "all supernatural entities," "all Scions," or "all women"), but anyone who has as many or more dots of Epic Perception than he has Epic Charisma know he is speaking and can listen in by spending a point of Willpower. The Scion can use any relevant Epic Charisma Knack while using Attention, Everyone! but all usual limitations remain in place and their costs are tripled.

The area this Knack can reach is determined by the Scion's Epic Charisma dots, and it costs a number of points of Legend to activate for a speach (up to a Scene long) equal to the number of Epic Charisma dots required to reach the chosen area. The Scion may choose to effect an area less than his maximum is he so chooses.

Then it hit me: The Gua'ould pretended to be gods from just about all Pantheons found on Earth. What if... What if those Gods were real too? And had powerful children?

What kind of game do you run from here?

(Whether the titans have escaped or not is up to you.)

*As a side note: This brings up the issue of Pantheons that are specific to worlds other than earth. It always seem kind of small minded to me that Earth is the *only* battle ground with the Titans and Gods.

My personal thoughts are that this allows some really neat flexibility with the setting, the PC's could be uncovering hte stargate, trying to figure out how it works... Or they could be Scionic (hehe I wanted to use that word badly) military types for a government that has recovered the stargate. (I do not assume the americans by default, since as a Canadian, the appeal of a Canadian SG program is very cool.)

My Exalted ones are notoriously extensive. I have some for Scion I thought I would post, and I would like to see how your games come out.

There are 39 PCs here, from a pool of 18 players. 11 men, 7 women.
Of these PCs, 21 were created after Hero before Demigod, 10 after Manifestations of Ichor before CB, 3 after CB before Ragnarok, 4 after all books were out. So take that into consideration.

Pantheon Popularity first, then Parent. Ties are broken by first if the same person made two PCs from the same Pantheon/Parent it is ranked lower, then campaign characters are compared to one shot characters, then alphabetical.

6.Kali 2
7.Izanami 2
8.Anubis 1
9.Baron Samedi 1
10.Damballa 1

Part of what I find interest here is the two most reviled PSP'd Pantheons are in the top two. Aesir being number one, with Jotenblut having far fewer defenders then Arete, though they are essentially even. OTOH, 3 of the 4 Pantheons most accessible/well known to the euro-types are the top three, with the later coming Tuatha being on the bottom pretty much.

As far as parents, well Odin and Tezcatlipoca are indeed represented here. Vishnu is not, but he is a latecomer, ditto Delling. They aren't exactly way ahead however. While not listed, we have had 1 of Hel, Apollo, Zeus, and several other less endowed with favored gods, so its really not a terribly big gap.

OK lets talk about sex
Here are the sex of the PCs by Pantheon

Pantheon Male Female
Pesedjet 2 3
Dodekatheon 3 4
Aesir 4 3
Amatsukami 2 2
Loa 2 1
Tuatha Dé Dannan 1 1
Celestial Bureaucracy4 0
Deva 0 3
Rus 0 0
                                 21 18

Nothing too surprising. Lets look at Player sex though

Pantheon Male Female
Atzlánti 3 1
Loa 3 0
Tuatha Dé Dannan 1 1
Celestial Bureaucracy 4 0
Deva 0 3
Rus 0 0
                                        23 16

1/3 of the ladies playing played an Aesir. Aesir+Dodekatheon make more then half the characters played by gals, which is not true overall, or even close with guys. Interestingly, no gals have gone for CBs, Amatsukami, or Loa yet, while no guys have gone for Devas. This is doubly interesting as every major Loa representative (Brigitte, Marie, Amelia, Marinette, even the Loa ghost in Seeds of Tomorrow and the Loa in the fiction at the beginning of Secrets of the World) was female, with no major males outside villains (Siambi and Kalfu, and even then Mami Wata was female)

One more thing...how often do you think Players Scions are the same sex as their parent?

Male Parent/Male Scion 20
Female Parent/Female Scion 9
Male Parent/Female Scion 9
Female Parent/Male Scion 1

I thought this was really interesting. 29 of 39 are the same sex as their parents. Only one was a male Scion of a Goddess. Granted, the bulk of the parents were male, and the bulk of our players are too.

Where do you make your Scions from. Bear in mind all 18 of us are from the United States

United States of America 24
Mexico 5
India 3
United Kingdom 2
Canada 1
People's Republic of China 1
Germany (East Germany) 1
Japan 1
Trinidad and Tobago 1

The Parentheses were where the country changed since the PC was born.
About what you would expect from a game with a bunch of Americans I guess. I would like to point out I think that is the record for most PCs from Mexico ever with us.

Right, so thats what Pantheons and parents have proven most popular round here. Also a look at what folks are playing. What have your games generally looked like?

Riptide *****
(1 purview, 1dot power, 3dot power)
Riptide is a greek xiphos made of clistial bronze. this adds +2 damage on to the weapon. if the target is atleast 2 legand lower then you this weapon deals agrivated damage. if the creature is your leagend or higher it deals leathel damage. but this will not affect a any thing with out a legand score. the blade can also change in to a pen or back at the cost of one legand point. and gives access to the water purview.

Neckter/ambrosha *** (three dot power)
Necter and ambrosha are the food of the gods. able to heal wounds that would kill a mortal man. but can not be used by a mortal for it will burn them to ash. a scion being partly devine can use such power but must do so in small doses less it distroy them.
Ambrosha/neckter has the fallowing affect per dose
A hero lvl scion can take up to 2 doses of necter/ambrosha in a 3 day peried. the first dose acts as Health 3 converting Leathel damage to bashing role Stam+legand. Second dose converts bashing to healed. if a hero takes a third dose with in three days thay role stam+legand and take that much agrivated damage
A demi god can take a third dose of ambrosha/neckter with in a Minet of the first two and can role stam+legand and convert that meany points of agrivated too Leathel damage.
(role over allways still resalts from this healing.

Lighting Spear****(1 purview and 3dot power)
this is a Celestial bronze spear using the Kantos templit and adding the sky or war Purviews

Reed Pipes***( 1 purview and 2dot power)
these rees pipes give access to the Furtility Purview and can affect the mood of the listener

New Scion Cycle - Valkyrie

I am starting a new Scion cycle shortly for 2 players. This post summarises my efforts to date. Any thoughts welcome.

It is set in a Norse only world and will be loosely based around Ragnarok. For inspiration, we are using Supernatural but subbing out the Christian myth for Norse myth, horror for myths, guys for girls, classic rock with classic techno (theme song will be Bachelorette by Bjork), and the Chevy Impala for Ducati Streetfighters (http://www.ducati.it/it/bike/bike.do?task=techSpec&id=1470) :)

I am planning on using the two pdf sceanrios, heavily modified to suit the specifics. The first up is Wolfheim which I am moving to Wolf Run, Ohio and replacing Der Koenig Puck with the Erl King.

PC creation is this week, with the first two sessions before Xmas. One PC is likely to be a Scion of Freya or Freyr and the other a Scion of one of the Aesir, which should be good to build a subplot over the Vanir plans to use Ragnarok to rediscover Vanaheim.

I have an idea for a Relic central to the story, being the broken sword that kept Fenris mouth open. It seems not to have been detailed in Norse myth besides its prominence, leaving me lots of juicy ideas about its history and connection to Ragnarok.

We are using the following house rules (though I am not really posting these for discussion - more for completeness).

Willpower, Virtue, and Legend

1. Willpower and Virtue channels scale. At Hero level, they grant extra dice. At Demigod, they grant auto-successes. At God, they grant auto-successes x2. Essentially, spending Willpower is like channelling a Virtue at level 1.

2. Bonus dice from stunting also scale in the same manner as Willpower and Virtues.

3. You regain Willpower, Legend and Virtue/Legend channels at the end of each story and through stunts in or out of combat. At Hero level:

            1 bonus die – regain 1 Legend

2 bonus dice – regain 1 Willpower or 1 Virtue channel

The premise - The game is going to start in roughly 380AD Britain. I like the idea of a Scion game happening through the ages. However I'm no history major so this is more akin to a Hercules/Xena history then a factual disertation on the Saxon invasions. More fun, less learning:) As a result any pantheon is okay BUT if you're desperate for the Loa make a half way feasible excuse please. And we already have one character from the modern day who's been trapped in the past so that avenue's taken:)

When - Mondays from 7-10 Atlantic time (6-9EST) on IRC.

Thanks

Quote:

Add the DV to the difficulty of the attack (usually standard difficulty). Effectively, you are subtracting your character’s DV from the number of successes the attacker’s player rolls. If you reduce that number to 0, your character escapes unscathed.

So to hit an opponent you don't need to get successes = DV but successes > DV (or successes = DV+1)? For some reason, I always assumed that DV became the difficulty for the attack.

BTW does anyone know if you round up or down for DV?

Feedback welcome, and feel free to steal, like with any of my House Rules.

Defend Other
Speed 5, DV –1
A PC can take an action to defend someone else. When they do this, they must use their Parry DV, and if incoming attacks are Lethal, must be able to parry Lethal. This means using a Melee weapon, or possess either the Knack Body Armor or Invulnerable Nail (remember, you don’t need to ACTIVATE Body Armor to parry Lethal, just have it). Note unless the Knack Whirlwind Shield is active, you cannot parry Bullets. If an attacker passes the DV needed, they can choose to hit the defender or can carry on their attack to hit the ward…but the cancelled successes from the parry apply.

You can split your action to also attack, however, you must remain right in front of your ward; Thus your unable to pursue foes not attacking you or your ward in melee. Also, unless they are attacking your ward, you can use your full dodge DV as normal; you only have to try and parry attacks coming at someone else. Note if others help you guard, you can raise your Parry DV by 1 per person assisting, to a maximum of +5.

Example: Pierre wants to defend Saltmarsh Andy. Pierre’s parry DV is 4, 3 because he took an action. Any attacks which would come at Andy have to break a 3 DV to hit him. If they do, they lose 3 successes…and Andy still gets his 5 DV against the attack. Andy could use a better bodyguard.

Block Movement
Speed 5 DV –1
You can try and stop someone from moving to a person, or moving to a doorway or object. If the target tries to move past, make a contested (Strength or Dexterity) + Athletics roll. Ties favor the Blocker. If the target fails, he cannot pass. If the target attacks the Blocker, the Blocker must parry. He cannot dodge as that would mean getting out of the attackers way. All other attacks on the blocker, however, he can dodge normally.

Like with Defend Other, you can split your action to Block and Attack. Remember to apply the speed of Block Movement and the add’l DV penalty though. You can block up to three people with a single Block Movement, and can split your action to try and block 6.
