Auck. Sorry about dragging this up after a while, but the last few pages have ground to a halt and this makes my skin crawl.

As any fule no, this is preeeeeeetty much spurious. It was the conclusion of a fairly poor-quality study (with a footnote cautioning, well, caution), was measuring emotional communication and measured a fairly cheeky surrogate for 'information'.

I know it doesn't impact your point (that we feel closer to people we have sensory contact with) but... it makes my hair stand on end to hear it said is all :p

I guess that's an interesting thing. Who's in a long-distance relationship? I've recently (and much to my surprise) found myself in a relationship with a guy who unfortunately is reading maths in Durham (whereas I'm in Essex), but it's working out OK. We'll call each other up maybe four or five times a week and talk (or 'talk' hurr hurr hurr) to keep in sensory contact, chat online an awful lot, and he's coming down from Durham soon, and I'm planning to go up while he's in Herts with his parents so we can get some time together. Plus any LARPs we're both in (It's not a good game unless you wake up wearing someone else's Snazz* ;) ). Who else is in this situation? How do you deal with it?

I'd honestly be shocked to find that anyone who's reached a point where they have sexual thoughts hasn't had at least one thing arouse them that they felt some degree of shame about and were hesitant to share with others. In other words , yeah, we're all pervs with something to hide .

I understand you probably aren't looking for validation here, but this actually isn't all that unusual. As someone who, believe it or not, studies sex and sexuality as a hobby/matter of intellectual curiosity, I can tell you there are vastly weirder things than that.

Case in point: anyone familiar with my work knows that I'm quite fond of golems. Imagine my surprise when I recent learned of agalmatophilia, which is a sexual attraction to statues. These folks are known as "Medusa fetishists."

Now, I'm not here to pass judgment, but you can imagine how hard my friends laughed when they found out about this through me and then looked at the stack of golem stories I had just finished. It's just my luck I would turn out to be an accidental pornographer.

that is pretty funny.  something that kind of weirds me out is the fact that there are huge amounts of horse and dog breeding videos (friend back in NC breeds both) and it dawned on me the other day that someone was definatly watching these and getting some pleasure out of it.  then i realized, wait we are human, we are all fucking freaks.
