It is not that. It is that the way the Maidens avoid the collar of samsara is to indulge in irresponsibility, which in turn is bad for the world since they have the job of making the universe keep going.

It's occurred to me that Creation is rather like an end product coming out of a factory. The Loom is the machinery that produces the item (or one of the machines, at least), and the Maidens are the production engineers consulting the blueprints that are samsara. They can go off of their own designs instead, but the end product doesn't end up matching the blueprints, at that point.

Oversimplification, maybe, but it's a good place to get a start. Ultimately, it gives the ST a door for the Maidens to know whatever the ST wants them to know.
Still trying to settle on a sig. Let's try...

And more. It tells them that it's ok for them to not know something, even if that something is big and important and relevant to their purview. Further, samsara is filtered through the prism of the maidens, which takes the already splotchy view and throws a heavy filter over the image. Yet they stare very intently and deliberately at anything they can see because seeing some of the way things should be is better than seeing nothing.

The unspoken corollary that I didn't add in my drunken stupor. Drink me once, shame on me, drink me twice...yeah, okay, not sure where that one was going.

Regardless, unknowns are always bigger and scarier and more mysterious and hold more possibilities than known items. Just look at how many more people are interested in taking down Celestines now that they're all statted up. It's the old D&D adage: once you give the gods HP and AC, players start planning on how to kill them and take their stuff.

Also - love the word play on rose-colored glasses. Interesting side note: if you put on glasses with a certain hue, items opposite it on the color wheel appear black. I leave it to the sober to imagine what that implies for the Maidens.

I'm still laughing at the UCS, because I can't shake the vision of his internal conversations:
Chibi Compassion UCS on one shoulder
Chibi Conviction UCS on the opposite shoulder
Chibi Temperance UCS on another shoulder
Chibi Valour UCS on opposite shoulder

My friends and I were talking about this last night, and decided that the UCS's Chibi "angels" would be Mice. :P

::Billy has asked me out on a date! Squee!::
<Compassion Mouse> "But, if you accept, you'll make Kyle so jealous and you can't do that to the poor fool, he cares for you so much and this would be cruel. Plus, you don't really like Billy that much anyway."
<Conviction Mouse> "You're in COLLEGE, Missy, you have to attend to your studies and don't have time for dates! Get back to work!"
<Temperance Mouse> "It wouldn't be honest to go out with Billy, as despite how handsome he is you're still in love with Michael back home and you should be faithful to him. It's the right thing to do. So, say no."
<Valor Mouse> "DATE THEM ALL! YOU CAN DO IT! ALL OF THEM! GO! NOW!"

This example, of course, presents the UCS as a young naive college girl fresh from home. ;)

The Unconquered Sun is many things.  Don't try to shoehorn him by saying he's not a young college girl, because that is an attempt to impose your view of him onto him, and that would be a form of conquering him, and you know what happens to people who try to conquer the Unconquered Sun.

They wisely get him to surpress his virtues first and own him like a Japanese schoolgirl in Hentai.

Paraphrase: "The Unconquered Sun is incapable of learning any Sidereal styles, nor is he interested in doing so.  He has difficulty imagining he is missing anything important."

There are two possible translations of this idea, but I prefer the one that screams, "FUCK YOU, RAINBOW-BOYS!"

My brain isn't at full power right now. What's the other translation?

He's an idiot. Having difficulty imaging he is missing anything is either a sign of ignorance or smug superiority.

Imagine which one the Unconquered Sun is likely to be showing.

When I read the entry about Gaia drawing a Comet nearer and riding it out into the Wyld on a quest she will return from, unleashing crazy primal energy... I didn't think too much about it.

Then one of my friends said, "So would you call the physical form she left behind... an... Illusion... of Gaia?"

I don't get the reference.

What precisely would SMA offer him that would matter to him or be useful to him?

Illusion of Gaia is the title of a video game, I think for the Super Nintendo.

I personally see him on the side of "I'd need that why?" but to play devil's advocate........I could see putting it in the same camp as learning Holy High Speech or taking the form of humanity. He didn't *need* to do either, but there is such a thing as respect and admiration for what people intend with their actions, and the SMA are very much the tools of understanding and the defense of Creation of a universally harried subset of the Exalted. He may have his own particular Exalted, but he is the boss of everything. Showing both his power and his compassion for those that do a job very much like his by acknowledging their achievements is not exactly outside his bounds.

Does he really need those martial arts with his ability to perfectly do anything he sets his mind to? No, they'd only really be useful if he starts going against his Virtues....and admitting he could do that and taking steps to work around it would go against his Virtues right there. While he may not need their function, it could help unity in heaven to be closer to Exalted not his own and a sign of respect for their patrons. And it could be another thing to add to the list of his excellence that he could learn the highest of Martial Arts as easily as he does everything else.

Personally I'd think it's an outright stupid idea because one of the things that keeps him balanced is the vast majority of his power has an off switch, and turning around and going "Congrats, you managed to shut down his nearly total invulnerability and infinite damage attacks! Of course he is still one of the most powerful beings that ever existed and he knows SMA, so you are probably still fucked. Still, great effort!" is the greatest anti-climax ever......but I also don't think giving the ability to learn it is unworkable. I'd just have to work it more than what is there now, and I don't know that it adds a lot.

Granted if I was working with one of the seriously min-maxed groups I've seen over the years that is at brutally high Essence, I might use it. Just to show that even a Sun that is conflicted isn't going to roll over if he thinks it'll hurt Creation, and I think everyone should feel they've earned a victory over him.

I would think it would depend on what virtues are being suppressed.
