I don't know about you all, but after the gazilionth time someone is asking for how XP works with Merits I've decided it's time for something to solve this once and for all.

Here is the idea: I'm going to pin a single locked post on top of every nWoD game forum listing a number of FAQ about that game. The title will be pointing newbie posters to read that thread first and see if there already is an answer to their question. The posts will be edited whenever an update is needed.

This thread is made to gather FAQ across the whole new WoD. I may also do this with the old WoD, MET/LARP, Scion and Exalted depending on how well this goes.

Here are the rules:
1: Please provide both the question and the answer for each subject you think should be in the FAQ.
2: The subjects must have clear answers.
3: The subjects must be ones that come back over and over again.
4: The answer must be backed up either by the official books, someone from White Wolf, or they must be agreed upon by the fans in general as the proper interpretation of the rules.
5: You may include subjects where the answer is 'there is no official answer' if the subject is heavily debated (example: Are Changeling Arcadia and Mage Arcadia the same?).
6: I will include reference links to errata and wiki pages, so please don't mention those here.
7: I will also include a general warning stating 'Your Storyteller may of course rule otherwise'. Please don't mention that here.
8: Please do not start huge discussions about subjects. Just let me know if you think there still is no clear answer to a subject that someone else has listed.

I'll start off with a few I know of. Though there are is a few questions between brackets to you all to fill in the blanks for me.

General WoD:
Q: Do you need to buy all Merit dots with XP?
A: Yes, you need to pay for each dot, even if the dot doesn't do anything.
Example: The Giant Merit costs: 2x1 + 2x2 + 2x3 + 2x4 = 20 XP.

Changeling and Mage:
Q: Are Changeling Arcadia and Mage Arcadia the same?
A: There is no official answer. You'll have to decide for yourself.

General WoD:
Q: Does the 5th dot also cost double XP at character creation?
A: No. This rule only applies to the Attribute/Skill/Merit dots you get at character creation, not starting XP.

Vampire and Mage (and others? please let me know if I missed others, including Skills and Merits)
Q: Can I get to level 5 with the extra dot Attribute you get with the Mage or Vampire template, or does the 5th dot still have double cost here as well?
A: You can go to level 5 with those. The double cost rule does not apply here.
Official White Wolf answer is given here: http://forums.white-wolf.com/cs/forums/p/6594/139266.aspx#139266

Vampire:
Q: The Blood states that a Vampire bite does aggravated damage. Is this true?
A: No, this has been rectified as a mistake. (Please help me out in finding an official mention about whether it's actually lethal or bashing).

I want to include the mention that Merits at level 6+ must also be bought at double the dot cost at character creation, provided the Storyteller actually gives more dots or the character type gets more (like Banishers). I know there is a mention of this in an Imbued Item or Artifact description somewhere in a Mage supplement. Please help me find it.

Edit: This is not the actual FAQ post, just a thread to collect them, in case anyone was wondering.

WoD Core, page 157, under Bite:

"...Generally, a bite from a person inflicts bashing damage, while that from an animal or supernatural creature inflicts lethal harm. The Storyteller may decree that a human combatant can bite an opponent only after successfully grappling."

I'd say vampires fall under "supernatural creature", because of their protracting fangs.

There's a small sidebar titled "The Vampire's Bite" in VtR Core on page 165, but it doesn't specify what kind of damage a vampire's bite causes, only that damage can be inflicted either by biting or Feeding. The sidebar references the same section I quoted above, so I'm assuming the writers assumed the answer is too obvious to repeat in VtR Core.

When The Blood was out with a remark about biting causing aggravated damage, developers/writers jumped in to say that was a slip (probably due to a Masquerade holdover) and that it's meant to cause lethal. I'd mention it in the FAQ if this question is selected, because the bit in the core is too generic.

There is errata for the very high-cost Language Merit in the errata section of the download page.

Q:  Can a Vampire Embrace [X]?
A:  In general Major Templates cannot be Embraced and just die, Minor Templates lose their Minor Template when Embraced.

This should have specific examples. Probably all the major templates should be listed.
The "In general" statement will leave the question unanswered.

I can't seem to edit my post, but is this better?

I think it might be a good idea to separate the FAQ sticky thread from a discussion on it.

Yeah, a Moderator only sticky thread will avoid the actual useful stuff getting bogged down between the discussion about what is or isn't useful, which will inevitably crop up.

Again, this thread is only to collect some stuff. As soon as we've got the majority of issues listed here I'll un-sticky this thread and make a new locked sticky thread which will hold a compilation of FAQ in a single post. This will be done per game, so Vampire FAQ will only be visible in the Vampire forum, and so on.

Also, for some reason there is a bug in this forum that doesn't allow editing in a sticky thread. Keep that in mind when posting in here.

Good one. I'll be sure to post Game specific variants in each forum.

On that note: Does anyone know what the rules are for Major Templates becoming a Promethean?

Q:  How does Allies work if I want someone that's not a servant or my master?
A:  Allies are not for individuals, but a representation of your informal standing with a group of people.  There are optional Merits in supplements (such as the Friend Merit in the Requiem Chronicler's Guide) for representing relationships not covered by Retainer and Mentor.

I 'll have to check when I get home, but I could swear that I remember reading that body parts can come from any former supernatural, but it doesn't affect the resulting Promethean beyond maybe justification for odd Merits, maybe some stranger body memories.

That's my recollection as well.  This, of course, makes vampires unlikely candidates (esp. if you use the body decomposition rules in the Blood), but in general a dead corpse in the game doesn't really care what kind of supernatural it formerly was, and neither do the Prommies.
