Strangeness in the Proportion

A quick search revealed that this has never had its own thread.  Strangeness in the Proportion is an excellent WoD novel being posted in the blogs as a seventeen-part serial.  Enjoy.

Am I reading this right to think that you wrote Strangeness in Proportion? If so I have to say its been excellent so far, and I eagerly await future chapters. Simon is such an interesting character. Others may disagree with me here or find it creepy that I'm saying this, but I think he's absolutely adorable.

Yes, Scriv is the author of SitP.

Agreed!  I have loled hard repeatedly with him and at his antics and thoughts.

Appreciate the comments.

Your "adorable" comment makes my day, Protagonist (awesome screen name, by the bye). The idea was to make Simon adorable, despite all of the creepy qualities stacked against him, and to see if I could get away with a possible necrophile being sympathetic. That was the experiment, anyway. And after spending so much time with the character to myself...I wasn't sure if I got him across right. If people would just look at Simon and say, "Sick! Why would I want to spend time with him?"

But, whatever else happens from here, at least I know that people seem to be getting Simon on the whole emotion-1.gif

I'm sure it would make Simon happy, the poor dear.

I second (or was it third or fourth?) the Strangeness... love. I'm eagerly awaiting the rest, and have had the images and characters running through my head since I plowed through the first 5 installments yesterday.

I love the 'eccentric among eccentrics' concept, the thought that one forensic pathologist might creep out others never crossing my mind until now for some reason.

Loved the dog bit.

Love Simon's family background.

And especially, because I love RPG fiction, but tend to get turned off by hit-you-over-the-head game references, I LOVE that I'm not entirely sure what or who Simon really is yet, in terms of character type. Unaffiliated Mage? SinEater who made his bargain early in life? Pre-bargain SinEater? Psychic? Medium? Who cares, it's a great story so far, and even if we never find out for sure, I love the realistic treatment of such an unreal scenario.

Good show, sir. Good show.

Oh wow, wow, wow, Aeleona. Sweet drawing emotion-1.gif  One of my favoritest things is to see something I've written take on a manifested form, be that concept art, spoken word, or acted out. Makes me giddy to see how someone else sees something I saw.

I concur, Christiangoth, plush Simons. The production pays for itself, what with the Mountain Dew endorsements ("Do the Dew...not cadavers.").

Thanks for the comments, illiterati. Seeing what specific things worked for you really helps. After spending so much time on this project, it's not always easy to see from my perspective. Really glad you liked the dog and family bit (they mostly came well after the first draft, and I'm glad they did...probably at the suggestion of my editor). I'm ESPECIALLY glad you enjoy the ambiguity of Simon. I too prefer RPG fiction that doesn't wield the game references with a heavy hand. I also wanted to make something that my non-WoD fan friends (and perhaps yours) could read without being lost. Perhaps a gateway drug to the WoD. But I still wanted to have layers and layers of easter-eggs for the more die-hard fans to pick out (even if some are ambiguous).

Now I just need to learn how to sew and make plush dolls...

Thanks, ariums13. The interludes allowed me to touch on the wider bits of the WoD of Chicago, beyond what Simon is directly experiencing, in little windows, and at least play a little bit with the other bits of the setting I love (like, in this case, Changeling).

illiterati, I do not have a teddybear with X's sewn into the eyes, but I do have a teddybear with its eyes ripped out, stuffing oozing out of the ocular cavities. It was given to me, by a friend, as a gag gift referencing a short story I wrote called "Teddybear Rex".

Spoiler warning:

I just wanted to post about the Odin reference in Chapter 10 (Part 7).  We already have Yggdrasil growing in Simon's head.  Now we have Simon going blind in one eye.  Definite Odin thing happening there.

Has anybody else caught mythological references?  If I missed something I'd love to know!

She had only a bit part in the first draft, appearing in only one scene. Then she kicked my ass (who'd have thunk that the Alley sold meta-fictional steel-toed boots) and demanded a bigger role. And I'm glad she did.

Much appreciated emotion-1.gif

I wanted this to be less looking at the WoD through a hellish aquarium and more of a claustrophobic POV from one of the poor shivering newts inside said aquarium. Spend years playing the monsters, and it's easy for them to become just the slightest bit mundane. But looking at them through the eyes of someone who just tripped down the rabbit hole can be a reminder of how cool they are. And if that did indeed come across at all, I am a happy newt. Lots of research went into the various bits of this, but if I had one bible, it was the core WoD book, right down to the cover photo (that could be any of us stumbling down that dark street...).

Worry not. I'm told it's being worked on and that all the novel chapters will soon be available for reading again. I always assume any technical change to things will have most every hiccup it can at first (but then, it's all techno witchcraft to me).

In the meantime, to sate you, you might take a free listen to my story "Blood, Snow, and Sparrows" over at Psuedopod.

It features another drug-clouded hero pinning over a dead girl...a little bit different, but I think he was my proto-Simon (I do believe I wrote it just before starting on this novel).

See...see how I swooped in for that opportunistic plug

Just wanted to thank you for one of the best WoD novels I've read this far. Actually being able to call it a World of Darkness (instead of the Dim Lights so popular in oWoD and some other novels out there...) where you can't tell what's going on for sure nor who's on what side and actually who's what... All that is gold.

Now waiting for the blogs to be up so I can continue reading...

Thanks, Alex! One cool thing about the serial format is I've been able to get feedback and interact with readers during the whole process, which is exciting for me because I'm just a WoD fanboy too.

And thank you for the links, Nin.

And if you notice any format abnormalities from the change over, send word to the powers that be...but please, please, do so nicely. I've noticed a lot of unnecessary angst on the web over a little thing like a website change.

Simon sends his love! He'd do so in person, but he's busy filling out Valentines Day cards with a scalpel. Romantics.

I have to sincerely thank you for the SitP and I look forward for the 4 new parts ( I think that the final number will be 17 :/, but I don't know if that is true ). I especialy like that you incorporated some Slavic mythology as I hail from Slovakia (The Blood Countess Elizabeth Báthory lived here ;) ) and to see that some of our mythos is in there is great. And I like that you used Absinthe as the drug. It is my favourite spirit. I had some fun with it when I drank too much and the only think I can remeber is seeing toad, fire salamander and blinking lamp :D.

And at last I have to say that I love Simon and all the other characters. They are exquisitely lovable.

I think my favorite thing thus far (on part 14 now) about the entire story, is the incredibly intelligent way it is written. Yes, Simon is an awesome character with a wealth of knowledge, but it goes to show that the author puts an incredible amount of time and effort into those bursts of brilliance. Also, my girlfriend has read each part directly after me and while she's never shown any interest in my World of Darkness pursuits (yeah, I only keep her around 'cause she's hot and can cook ;) Kidding!!), she has been able to follow the fiction without any problems. It has even sparked a few evenings of thumbing through my books to give her examples of how certain things would function "in game."

I would definitely purchase an entire series following Meeks in particular or the OS in general.

Now, double checking on what I thought was said ages ago: This will be released in print, yes?

Because GOD DAMN, this story kicks ass. The World of Darkness at it's best, I've been creeped out, excited, sympathetic, torn, so on and so forth reading this novel. It's unique perspective, strange story, wonderfully juxtaposed setting and more(I could go on, but we'd be at this all day) makes this probably one of the best stories I've read in a LONG time.

Many Thanks Scrivnomancer for this.

As a final question, next section released should be the last one, yeah? I remember it being said this was nineteen parts.

PS: I giggled at the references to Hunter.
